What is Dharma? Understanding Your Soul Purpose
Alright, let’s dive into the good stuff—what is Dharma, aka soul’s purpose?
So, Dharma is the Sanskrit term for purpose. In other words your soul’s purpose.
Dharma is your essence, your unique vibe, the part of you that says, “I’m here for something amazing.” It’s like a compass guiding you back to yourself, where you feel aligned, fulfilled, and truly you.
Now here’s the beautiful truth bomb: you already have a purpose.
Yes, you!
If you’re breathing and alive on this planet right now, then trust me, your soul has a reason for being here. Before you even showed up, your soul chose this life, this journey, your parents, your qualities, your looks, your desires, basically, EVERYTHING to fulfill its unique purpose.
So your Dharma isn’t about finding something outside yourself; it’s about reconnecting with what’s already inside. Your Dharma is already inside you, waiting to be remembered. It’s the journey of becoming more of who you already are.
Dharma isn’t about becoming someone else or proving yourself. This is about peeling back the layers, seeing your value, and showing up as your magnetic, self-loving self. Your purpose, that soul-aligned mission, is sitting right there, just waiting for you to say, “Yes, this is me.”
So, if you’re feeling that pull, that sense that there’s something more, guess what? You’re already on the path. You’re remembering your Dharma—your soul’s purpose—and stepping into a life that feels fully aligned, fulfilling, and unapologetically you.
Common Myths About Finding Your Purpose
When it comes to discovering your Dharma, it’s easy to get tripped up by some stubborn myths. Let’s break down the biggest misconceptions that keep people from fully stepping into their soul purpose.
Myth 1: Only the “Chosen Few” Have a Purpose
Ever feel like purpose is just for the “chosen ones,” the lucky few who magically stumble onto their calling? Been there, thought that.
But here’s the truth: if you’re alive and breathing, you’ve got a purpose. Every single soul on this planet has a reason for being here.
You don’t need to be “chosen.” Your soul chose you, with all your uniqueness, for this lifetime—because your purpose was meant to be fulfilled by you, exactly as you are.
Myth 2: Purpose is Something You Have to “Find”
Forget the treasure hunt! You don’t have to search high and low or wait for some grand revelation. Your purpose isn’t hidden in a faraway place—it’s inside you, part of your essence, your core.
Your Dharma isn’t some X-Files mystery that’s “out there”; it’s a memory waiting to resurface. Your only job is to remember it, to reconnect with what’s already within you.
Yes, life’s challenges, joys, and lessons are all designed to help you reawaken that purpose, but it’s been part of you all along.
Myth 3: Dharma is Just a Job
This is a big one! We often think that “finding your purpose” is about finding the perfect job.
But Dharma is way more than a title on your business card. Sure, it can show up in your career—but it’s also in your relationships, in your acts of kindness, in the love you bring to the people around you. Your purpose is woven into every part of your life. Maybe it’s how you light up a room or make others feel heard.
Soul purpose is as diverse as we are, so don’t box it into just one role or paycheck.
Myth 4: You Only Get One Purpose
Let’s get this straight: your purpose is a journey, not a single destination.
Let this sink in.
Dharma is dynamic, just like you. It grows, shifts, and deepens as you do. You might find yourself living out one aspect of your purpose for years, and then—boom!—a new layer unfolds.
Your soul purpose evolves with you, reflecting the different stages of your growth. So don’t stress about nailing down “the one” purpose; let it be a living, breathing part of you that expands as you do.
Myth 5: Your Purpose Has to Be Grand and World-Changing
This is a big one, but let’s make it simple—your Dharma doesn’t have to change the entire world to be meaningful.
Some people’s purpose might be bold and visible, creating a massive impact. But for others, the purpose might be more intimate. Your Dharma could be in the love you pour into raising your kids, in making others feel seen, or in sharing kindness with the world around you. Every purpose counts, whether it’s on a global stage, on a personal level, or somewhere in between.
The goal? Simply honor what your soul chose to do here because that’s what’ll bring you true joy and fulfillment.
Stepping into your Dharma means letting go of these myths and embracing your unique journey. Your purpose is waiting to be lived, in whatever way feels most aligned for you.
My Journey to Finding Purpose Through Self-Love
Let’s rewind to a time when self-love felt like a distant concept to me.
I grew up in an emotionally challenging environment, where I learned to constantly question my worth. I felt small, unseen, and unworthy of love. I believed that my worth depended on others’ approval, and I fell into a pattern of overachieving, people-pleasing, and perfectionism just to feel a sense of belonging.
I remember asking myself one day, Why would anyone even want to be my friend? I didn’t feel special, didn’t think I had anything valuable to give, and deep down, I believed I was nothing.
These beliefs followed me like a shadow, convincing me that I had to prove myself just to feel safe or valued.
In my twenties, I found myself in a long-term relationship where I felt love and had a lot of fun but after a few years everything became stagnant. I wanted to start a family, but we weren’t moving forward.
I was constantly bending over backward, prioritizing my partner’s needs and neglecting my own (because I believed if I could make him happy, I would get what I wanted – boy, was I wrong…), all the while feeling resentful that I wasn’t getting what I needed. At the time, I thought the problem was communication—I thought if I could just learn to express myself better, everything would improve. But after a year of therapy, I came to a startling realization: the real issue wasn’t communication; it was my lack of self-love.
I didn’t see my own worth.
I didn’t believe I deserved to have my needs met or to be loved unconditionally.
And because I couldn’t love myself, I couldn’t truly stand up for what I wanted in my relationship.
When this clicked, it was a turning point. I started setting boundaries, and speaking my truth, and ultimately, I made the decision to end that relationship. As painful as it was, I knew I deserved a partner who could meet me where I was headed.
The more I embraced self-love, the more I gained the courage to make other big changes. I left a job I didn’t truly enjoy and started my own business in marketing.
Fast forward a few years, and I was mentoring entrepreneurs, helping them with their brand messaging and marketing strategies. But even with great plans in place, I noticed a pattern: many of my clients still felt stuck. They had the strategies, but they lacked the confidence to implement them. They didn’t believe in their own worth, and they struggled to ask for the rates they deserved, to put themselves out there, and to share their gifts boldly.
This realization led me to pivot from marketing to coaching. I wanted to teach people what I had learned about self-love, purpose, and creating a soul-aligned business, that feels like home. Everything I’d been through—my childhood, my relationships, my job—it all made sense.
My soul’s purpose was to guide others to love themselves so they could find their purpose and build a soul-aligned business from that.
The truth is, self-love is the key to everything. It’s the foundation of your magnetism, your manifestation power, and even your purpose. Without self-love, we’re so wrapped up in fear and self-doubt that we don’t even have the mental space to consider our purpose. But when you start to love yourself—even just a bit—you begin to see possibilities you didn’t see before, and see your capabilities in a whole new light.
This journey led me to my purpose, and now it’s my mission to help others discover theirs. First comes self-love, then comes purpose, then the soul-business —it’s the formula that changed my life, and it’s the one I’m here to share with you.
How to Start Finding Your Soul Purpose Today
Alright, let’s get practical. I promised you some actionable ways to connect with your soul purpose, and here we go.
Because for years, I was caught up in self-doubt, anxiety, and all the people-pleasing patterns that kept me from seeing my own worth. I was so focused on trying to fit in and be “good enough” for others that I had no room to even consider my own dreams or my own purpose.
Sound familiar?
If yes, this first step is definitely for you.
1. Build up your self-love muscle
So here’s the deal: self-love is where it all begins.
Without it, there’s no way to believe you’re worthy of a purpose.
Think back to what I shared earlier—when I didn’t feel like I was “special” enough to even deserve friends, how on earth could I ever imagine I had a purpose? If you don’t see yourself as valuable, then having a purpose seems impossible. That’s why self-love is step one.
Now, I know the journey of self-love takes time. I’m not saying you have to wake up tomorrow with perfect confidence. Even small steps are powerful here. Just start by recognizing your unique qualities and acknowledging what makes you.
If you’re not sure where to start, here’ a practice to get you moving in the right direction:
Grab a notebook and write down one thing you love about yourself. Make a list that’s all about celebrating you. These don’t have to be big, life-changing things; they can be as simple as, “I’m proud I took a break when I needed it today.” Every day, add something new. Start with 11 days, or go a full month if you’re feeling inspired. This is all about seeing your value, one small act of self-love at a time.
Grab a notebook and start a self-love list—a place to write down the qualities you genuinely love about yourself. What makes you proud? What unique qualities make you, you?
Every day, add something new to the list for the next 11 days.
These don’t have to be big, life-changing things; honor the small wins, too.
Did you say “no” to something that didn’t serve you? Add it to the list.
Did you take a break when you needed it, or make yourself a great cup of coffee? Write it down.
Every little act of self-love is a powerful step toward discovering your true self.
Now here’s the real magic: I don’t want you to just write the list—feel it. What does that mean? When you jot down something you love about yourself, let yourself actually feel that love. Let it sink in. Feel the pride in taking care of you, in prioritizing yourself, in being you. You’ll know you’re truly connecting when you notice a warm glow in your chest, or a smile spreading across your face, maybe even a few goosebumps. Notice how your body responds—those feelings are your soul saying, yes, this is me.
Now if you’re ready to dive deep, my coaching program can take you through this transformation over just three months. We’ll go from doubting yourselve, people-pleasing, and constant anxiety to being clear on your needs, confident in who you are, and unapologetically prioritizing yourself.
2. Follow Your Joy
Here’s the thing: your soul crafted your Dharma—your purpose—to be something that lights you up.
Think about it.
What are you more likely to stick with? Something that fills you with joy and makes you lose track of time? Or something that feels like a chore, dragging you down with dread? Of course, you’re drawn to what makes you happy! That’s why your Dharma is rooted in joy; it’s designed to bring you fulfillment and excitement.
Now, this doesn’t mean it’s always going to be easy. But when you dive into your Dharma, immerse yourself fully, and let yourself get lost in it, that’s when you’ll feel true joy.
So start by following your joy—it’s one of the most powerful guides you have.
Think about the things that genuinely bring you joy:
- What activities make you lose track of time?
- What would you do if money was no object?
When you follow your joy, you’re connecting with what your soul naturally aligns with.
With my clients, we often create a “joy list” to capture the people, places, and passions that make them feel alive. Once you start tracking your joy, patterns emerge, and those patterns? They’re pointing straight to your Dharma.
3. Reflect Back on Your Journey So Far
Take a moment and look back at the big moments in your life—the challenges, the highs, the times that changed you. These experiences aren’t random; your soul chose them to get you closer to your purpose.
When I look back, I can see how everything—every experience, every passion—was leading me toward my purpose.
All the struggles I faced in my childhood, feeling like I didn’t love myself, and all the ways I didn’t value myself in my relationships—they weren’t just hurdles; they were lessons shaping me for my Dharma. Even my pull toward marketing, and my love of writing, were all part of it. Writing is how I share my voice now.
And those childhood moments I spent designing clothes for my Barbie dolls? They’re a part of my purpose, too. Because I know now that part of my Dharma is to create a clothing line in the future—designs that make women feel beautiful, clothes that celebrate every shape.
Every tough lesson or “aha” moment has been teaching you something about who you are and why you’re here. When you connect the dots, you’ll start to see a red thread weaving its way through your story—a thread that leads right to your Dharma.
So here’s a quick exercise to reflect back on your journey and reveal your Dharma:
- List Your Key Challenges & Lessons: Jot down major challenges or turning points in your life, and note what each one taught you. These lessons are often clues to your purpose.
- Identify Your Joys & Passions: Write down activities that have consistently brought you joy, from childhood to now. Look for recurring themes—these can be linked to your Dharma.
- Connect the Dots: Look for patterns between your challenges and joys. Ask yourself: What themes keep showing up? This will help you see how your experiences are shaping your purpose.
Reflect on these insights often, and watch how the pieces start to reveal your unique path.
